A Pirate's Soul...
That's the Army Street Pirate Skull Fourstar tee I did about a year ago.
The other, a newly released tee. If you don't know who it is, don't lose sleep on it.
The irony of it all is that there is a thread, literally and metaphorically, that ties these 2 stories together.
Hint: LA is blowing up....don't be on the late freight.

Now for the soul...Working on paintings for an upcoming artshow in downtown LA called
SOUL SIGNIFICANCE at CREWEST Gallery. I am honored to be among these artists.
All painters, varying in age. Show opens on April 15th.
Showing: Juan "Lucky" Alvarez, Rob Abeyta Jr., Patrick Martinez, Retna, Eriberto Oriol, EyeOne, Kofie

CLOTH...

PAINT,,,,,,,,

I just ordered "The Daily Practice of Painting: Writings 1962-1993" by Gerhard Richter.
They say Richter has brought painting back from the dead. He is brilliant, paintings are amazing.
In the past, my influences have mostly been spanish painters, like Antonio Tapies, abstract artists in New Mexico.
Jose Parla is killing it too. I also like Anselm Kiefer, Cy Twombly,
who aren't latin but have the passion.

Working daily in graphic/
fashion/product design, abstract painting challenges me to create something that isn't so literal.
I learned some things about concepting work with Michel Gondry & Spike Jonze. Tony Larson & Michael Leon.
My mind stretched when I thought it should shut.

At times, I participate in shows with other artists that are all figurative. In one show, my work was hanging next to
Dalek's and I wondered what everyone thought. I began to think I should have put a word or a form in the work
for the viewer to grasp.

As I paint for an upcoming show, JUNTA, curated by Matt Revelli from Upper Playground,
I fight against the urge to paint a distinguishable form.

JUNTA opens on Jan 28th at the SCION|Space in Culver City
.
Participating:
Eduardo Recife, Vasko, Vitche, Masa, Juan Chavez, Mr. Glaubitz, Dr. Lakra,
RazaUno, Mister Cartoon, Estevan Oriol, Robert Abeyta, Jr.

REPRESENT

DJ QUIK, representing Compton, CD design is posted up.
It's an honor to work with all these LA legends.

REPRESENT Design Conference in the "land down under" is coming up.
We'll be there, representing SA STUDIOS.
Like we know anything about design....

LA Music

Checkout the new Transplants limited edition CD I just completed. Well, awhile ago, but never had time to put together for posting.
Also, our little group at SA Studios just finished the new DJ QUIK and MACK 10 packages. Get rolling and feeling right.
Pick 'em up in Compton or Inglewood in Sept.

BONUS

I am interviewed in the new issue of IdN. There is also some Fourstar video footage on
the bonus dvd that comes along with the mag. Buy it at IdN or at YouWorkForThem.

The art show at FIFTY24SF was great. Big thanks to Matt Revelli and Ben.
Pics of the show are HERE.

NIKE's Promiseland
was a huge, huge success. Here's some pics on Dr. Romanelli's site.
A large sum of money was donated to LAUSD, which is in great need of funds,
so I was happy to donate my artwork to the auction.
Money also goes to the LA Parks & Rec. and Self-Help graphics in East Los.
My apologies to people that couldn't make it in. Seemed there where about 2500 people there. Nikos Constant,
Berto from SUPREME and Aaron Rose did an amazing job.

Alot going on. Tokyo next week for Fourstar with Ty Evans and Spike Jonze capturing the
SUPER CHAMPION FUNZONE Tour as it is named.

After Tokyo, the artshow with Estevan and Cartoon opens in SF on May 19th at the Upper Playground Gallery.

In addition, we are working on The Transplants CD packaging, Estevan has shot 2 music videos for The Transplants
in the last week and they just announced the Brain Grazer movie deal about Cartoon that Estevan will be directing
for Imagine Films....crazy.

Holy Water in London asked me to design a tshirt graphic for them. I wanted to convey the idea of "holy", "water"
and give some nod to Los Angeles. The 3 circles and 3 tears in the graphic have many references:
the 3 dots tattoo,"mi vida loca". The holy trinity of "the father, the son and the holy ghost" to name a few.

Check the Holy Water Shop to purchase the tee. They run in a limited edition of 100.

The "Fingers & Guns of Pure Hell" books are all gone. Come up to San Francisco in May for a show I am
having with Mister Cartoon and Estevan Oriol to see some of the original art from the book series I did.

The show opens May 19 and runs thru June 9th at the Upper Playground Gallery.
Keep an eye out in the upcoming JUXTAPOZ for more info.

I see plenty of fashion trends in my research for FOURSTAR
.
So, it begins to seep into my ideas for board designs. This series is based on
the Italian clothing company, ETRO.
Click the board to see the rest...

We don't do "campaigns" for FOURSTAR
.
The ads blur the line between a documentary travelogue, WHAM-O and skateboarding.
A "Super Champion Fun Zone". Here's some recent ads I've done.

Joel Ahrens is known around town as the "kite guru"...
He is kind of a spiritual genius, spitting profundities like Chogyam Trungpa and Hot Nickels mixed.
I made this little film about him for the OCMA Beautiful Losers Exhibit, 2005 (see previous entry).
We managed to finagle his sweet cart and place it in the Orange Lounge for all to view
with the movie .

Due to the nature of his comments being erratic and very esoteric, we had to subtitle the film.
I apologize if they are too small to read on the web. Posted a new, readable version, 16Feb.

However, if you wish to hear his knowledge, you're in luck.
Head out Sundays near the Wilmington River and the 110 South.
He gives inspirational talks, sells homemade "kite" candy bars, cookie mix, T-shirts and
special duct-taped kite flying shoes specifically for pivoting while flying.

BEAUTIFUL LOSERS: The Art Dump at the OCMA, Orange Lounge
Feb 6 - May 8, 2005

Exhibiting as the Art Dump at "You Are Here" will be Rob Abeyta Jr., Tony Larson, Andy Jenkins,
Andy Mueller, and Spike Jonze.

The Art Dump is essentially the in-house art department for the Girl Skateboard Company, consisting of a
creative crew that fluctuates between 4 and 8 people depending on their mood.

The group is more like a murder of crows than a typical design company, meaning they look more menacing than
they actually are and if you get to know them, they're actually nice people. As a cooperative art ensemble,
the Art Dump has created on-site installations at several venues around the world, including the piece,
"This is the Flow, at De Vleeshal in Middleburg, Holland and "What Logo?" a touring exhibition that took place in
Melbourne and Sydney Australia. "You Are Here" is an installation exploring the impact of a
pre-apocolyptic skateboarding punk rock youth culture on a world-wide mass consumer population
through video, audio and tactile means.

Logos...
I do tons of them it seems. Very meditative. There you go, light it up.....

Two Steps Back...

is a international traveling art show put on by 55DSL. 2 of the 4 pieces I have in the show
are in this beautifully printed limited edition book. Where do you get the book?
At the shows.....I think.

I'm pretty proud

of Estevan and Cartoon.
They keep it real and keep it going.
Like a Seville at 140mph on the 101 Freeway.

Which makes designing the upcoming 280 page book INK so much more easier.
Primarily a tattoo book, it chronicles Cartoon's tattoos thru the last several years photographed
by Estevan with words by both. Gangsters, lowriders, skid row, prison tattooing.
Eminem, 50 Cent, Blink182.
The story reads like a Phoenix rising from the ashes. It will give inspiration to anyone.

More on the movie site INK the movie.

GIRL Skateboard Graphics

are a special treat to be able design. The Sweet Treat Series, is actually about seeing Rock & Roll the way I see it.
It's about trippy freaks getting beat by the Hell's Angels (review American history 1969),
Mick Jagger on stage with Sonny Barger keeping the peace.
I had to drop the blood drips and the HA references out of the graphics .
My point of reference being, I believe we will relive those times. I can see it. There's Republicans in the House.

Fourstar 2005

is going full blown now. Like a rubber horse racing towards a cliff. Huh?
I'm knee deep in tee designs, catalog ideas, clothing designs and
a photo shoot/DVD film shoot coming up in a secret city.

People keep asking me for the last Fourstar catalog that came with a DVD shot by
Spike Jonze and Ty Evans. Why? Come on, it's not Adaptation or anything.
Although, there is a sick pool session on that sucker. Here's the movie.

I have been

shooting photos again. Mostly case studies for a small film I plan on doing for the
Orange County Museum of Art's New Media Lounge, The Orange Lounge.

The Girl Art Dump has been invited to show work in Feb. 2005 in conjunction with the
Beautiful Losers exhibit.

My film has no dialogue, a large wooden shanty cart, and a man that flies kites
as his spiritual practice. More to follow.
